Leadership Sequence


Sequence Requirements


The Leadership Sequence requires five courses, including one required core course and one course selected from four categories. All students must complete at least one course in government and one course in psychology.

  1. Core Requirement: one course
    LEAD 010 CM - Foundations of Leadership 
    This introductory course should be taken first and is required for all students.
  2. Ethics Requirement: one course
    These courses provide a philosophical and moral context in which to judge the nature of appropriate leadership. Courses which meet the ethics requirement  are listed below.
  3. Breadth Requirement: one course
    These courses enhance a liberal arts perspective of leadership. Courses which meet the breadth requirement  are listed below.
  4. Experiential Requirement: one course
    This requirement provides direct experience in positions of leadership and “hands-on” applications of leadership theories and techniques. Courses which meet the experiential requirement  are listed below.
  5. Leadership Capstone Requirement: one course

Learning Goals of the Leadership Sequence


Students who complete the Leadership sequence will have a thorough understanding of leadership theories, concepts, and leadership issues and will gain insight into their own capacity to lead. The specific goals of the Leadership sequence are:

  1. To understand leadership theories, concepts, and issues from a variety of disciplinary perspectives;
  2. To have knowledge of the methods by which leadership is studied;
  3. To understand cross-cultural and international issues in leadership;
  4. To appreciate the importance of ethics in leadership;
  5. To develop critical thinking and analytical and decision making skills;
  6. To develop written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills;
  7. To obtain awareness of one’s own leadership potential and competencies; and
  8. To gain practical experience in applying leadership knowledge and principles.
