Chemistry Major

Major Requirements

The major in chemistry requires the following courses:

1. CHEM 014L KS - Basic Principles of Chemistry -CHEM 015L KS - Basic Principles of Chemistry , or
   CHEM 029L KS - Accelerated General Chemistry 
2. PHYS 033L KS - Principles of Physics -PHYS 034L KS - Principles of Physics , or
   PHYS 030L KS - General Physics -PHYS 031L KS - General Physics 
   (with permission of adviser)
3. CHEM 116L KS - Organic Chemistry -CHEM 117L KS - Organic Chemistry 
4. CHEM 121 KS - Principles of Physical Chemistry -CHEM 122 KS - Principles of Physical Chemistry 
5. CHEM 126L KS - Advanced Laboratory in Chemistry -CHEM 127L KS - Advanced Laboratory in Chemistry 
6. CHEM 128 KS - Inorganic Chemistry 
7. BIOL 177 KS - Biochemistry /CHEM 177 KS - Biochemistry 
8. Elective: one advanced elective course (or two one-half credit courses) in chemistry, molecular biology, or interdisciplinary electives involving chemical concepts of techniques, chosen in consultation with the chemistry faculty
9. Senior Thesis: chemistry majors must complete a one- or two-semester thesis in chemistry. For further information, see Senior Thesis in Science .

In addition to the Keck Science overall learning outcomes, the Chemistry major also has the following student learning outcomes:

Students majoring in chemistry will be able to:

1. Apply knowledge of chemistry, physics and math to solve chemical problems;
2. Process a breadth of knowledge in analytical, physical, organic, analytical, inorganic and biochemistry;
3. Identify, formulate and solve complex problems;
4. Have a mastery of techniques and skills used by chemists.
