SPAN 155 CM - Small Wonders: The Latin American Short StoryThis course will examine major literary and cultural trends demonstrated in Latin American short fiction. We focus on writings from the 19th and 20th centuries and follow the construction of nations in the post-independence era and the issues of national identities in present day Latin America. We study Realist and Regionalist trends, the role of experimentation and innovation in Fantastic and Existentialist texts, and the role of the past in recent short stories from a continent looking towards the future.
Prerequisite: SPAN 101 CM or higher
