PHIL 166 CM - Political Philosophy: The Social Contract Tradition

Many contemporary views - both liberal and conservative - about the nature, purpose, and proper role of government can be traced directly back to a number of figures in the 17^th and 18^th centuries, who gave birth to what is frequently called the social contract tradition. In this course, we’ll read the works of Hobbes, Locke, Rousseau, and Kant, supplemented by selections from their contemporaries and philosophical descendants. Our aim will be to understand these works both on their own terms, and as foundations for today’s political debates.

Prerequisite: One previous course in philosophy or permission of the instructor.
