LIT 060 CM - American Writers to 1900

A survey of major American writing (excluding novels) illustrating the development of a national literature from the Colonial period through the 19^th century. Readings will be chosen from the works of such representative writers as Edwards, Franklin, Hawthorne, Poe, Melville, Emerson, Thoreau, Whitman, Dickinson, and Henry James. Considerable attention will also be paid to the social and philosophical forces which influenced the literature.
