HIST 061 CM - The New Asia: China, Japan, and Indonesia in the Modern EraRevolution, state building, modernization, and socio-cultural change in four representative cultural zones of Asia. The first part of the course examines imperialism and de-colonization, socio-religious reform movements, changing gender roles, and dynamics of political revolution. The second part explores the new forces which have reshaped the countries: the passing of charismatic leaders and revolutionary development strategies, the Japanese/East Asian economic model, and problems defining culture.
