Jewish Studies Sequence


Sequence Requirements


The Jewish Studies sequence requires completion of 5 courses, distributed as follows:

1. Jewish Civilization (1 course)


One survey course in Jewish history, literature, and thought selected from:

3. Electives (3 courses)


Three approved elective courses  exploring in depth particular aspects of Jewish history, literature, and thought

Learning Goals for the Jewish Studies Sequence


The learning goals of the Jewish Studies sequence are:

  1. To study the history, literature, and culture of the Jewish people.
  2. To understand the intersections between Jews and non-Jews and between Jewish society and the societies and cultures of the peoples with whom Jews have lived.

Student Learning Outcomes for the Jewish Studies Sequence


The student learning outcomes for the Jewish Studies sequence are:

  1. Students will be able to discuss the history, texts, beliefs, and practices of the Jewish people.
  2. Students will be able to explain the historical development of the Jewish people in various time periods and places.
  3. Students will be able to analyze the intersections between Jews and the major political, social, and cultural developments that influenced their life and development.
  4. Students will be able to analyze multiple sources of information (e.g., historical, literary, religious) that describe and seek to construct the Jewish experience.
