Leadership Sequence

Sequence Requirements
The Leadership Sequence requires 5 courses, distributed as follows:
1. Leadership Core (1 course)
Either of these introductory courses should be taken first:
2. Ethics (1 course)
Ethics courses provide a philosophical and moral context in which to judge the nature of appropriate leadership
3. Breadth (1 course)
Breadth courses enhance a liberal arts perspective of leadership
4. Experiential (1 course)
The experiential requirement provides direct experience in positions of leadership and “hands-on” applications of leadership theories and techniques
5. Leadership Capstone (1 course)
One capstone course in leadership
Notes:
- All students must complete at least one course in government and one course in psychology.
- No more than one course may be partial-credit.
Learning Goals of the Leadership Sequence
Students who complete the Leadership sequence will have a thorough understanding of leadership theories, concepts, and leadership issues and will gain insight into their own capacity to lead. The specific goals of the Leadership sequence are:
- To understand leadership theories, concepts, and issues from a variety of disciplinary perspectives;
- To have knowledge of the methods by which leadership is studied;
- To understand cross-cultural and international issues in leadership;
- To appreciate the importance of ethics in leadership;
- To develop critical thinking and analytical and decision making skills;
- To develop written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills;
- To obtain awareness of one’s own leadership potential and competencies; and
- To gain practical experience in applying leadership knowledge and principles.
