It has become increasingly important for students of science to be able to use a variety of powerful computational tools as aids in modeling and problem solving. Modeling is a fundamental quantitative method for understanding complex systems and phenomena. Creating simulations is complementary to the more traditional approaches of theory and experiment. Modeling and simulations create an approach which can investigate a wide range of problems but at the same time exploit the ever increasing power of computers. Moreover, students from a number of disciplines must be prepared to actively interact with the growing and ever-changing science network.
The sequence in scientific modeling differs from traditional majors because it focuses on the motivation and ideas behind the algorithms presented and not on detailed analyses of them.
To provide students with the computational tools needed to create models and simulations, CMC offers a six course sequence in scientific modeling. Several advanced courses in mathematics and science are prerequisites for the sequence. Courses used for completion of the sequence may also be used for major or general education requirements. Completion of the sequence will be noted on students’ transcripts.
