RLST056 CM - Jews Among Greeks and RomansFor roughly 600 years (300 BCE-300 CE), Greeks and Romans ruled over the land and peoples of the Mediterranean. Jews were one of those peoples. This class examines how Jews experienced Greek and Roman rule and the political, social, and cultural forces that resulted in new ways of being Jewish. During the course, students will engage mostly with the primary sources, literary texts, inscriptions, papyri, coins, and other material objects, in order to understand Jews living among Greeks and Romans. Particular attention will be devoted to the ways in which Jews used religious ideas and practices as ways to accommodate and also resist the political and cultural hegemony of the world in which they lived.
