FREN 104 SC - History, Memory, and Loss: Vichy (1940-45) in Contemporary FranceIn the late 1960s, France started to come to terms with its Fascist past and its complicity with the Holocaust. This course examines why and how French collective memory was reshaped a generation after the end of World War II. We will look at works by historians like Paxton, Rousso, Azema and Wieviorka; writers like Modiano, Duras, Raczymov, Finkielkraut; and filmmakers like Malle, Ophüls, Resnais, Lanzmann, and Losey.
Prerequisite: FREN 044 CM or equivalent
