SPAN167 CM - !Qué viva la música! Popular Music in Latin AmericaThis course studies the most significant and popular musical manifestations of Latin America such as samba, tango, salsa, bolero, and rock, among others. We examine the ways in which the national states have promoted the construction of a national consciousness (Brasilidade, Mexicanidad, Argentinidad) that is rooted in popular music. In addition, we explore how popular music in Latin America has served as a medium to produce discourses about race, ethnicity, gender and class. Moreover, in an increasingly globalized world where music transcends national boundaries, we study the production, distribution, and consumption of popular music from a global perspective.
