HIST175 CM - History from BelowThis course is an advanced introduction to how we define ‘history’, and to things that it is sometimes opposed to, such as ‘myth’, ‘memory’, and ‘story’/’literature’/’fiction’. The course also explores how the history of oppressed peoples has often been denied to them, and how they (and historians) have reclaimed it. Over fifteen weeks we will study three topics-first, archives, sources, and methods of history-writing across the world; second, the problem of writing peasant histories in South Asia; third, how history and myth have been in tension in the modern political Indian imagination.
