HIST150D CM - Sub-Saharan Africa in a Changing WorldThis course is a general survey of modern sub-Saharan African history from the 19th century to today through primary and secondary sources and works of fiction. Topics include the European conquest of Africa and the dynamics of colonial rule, the rising tide of African nationalism that ushered out colonialism. The course also explores the problems of independent African nations as they grapple with conflicts, neocolonialism, a changing global epidemiology, and contested identities, especially the question of sexual orientation.
