GOVT179C CM - Power, Politics, and Policy

This seminar explores the sociological, political, and ethical dimensions of some of the most contentious issues in contemporary society. By examining the intersections of power, politics, and policy, the course engages with key theoretical frameworks that shape modern political discourse, including critical race theory, settler colonialism, and neoliberalism. Drawing on the work of a diverse array of influential thinkers-such as Michel Foucault, Milton Friedman, Kimberlé Crenshaw, Harvey Mansfield, and Judith Butler-we will explore how power operates across various societal domains, such as race, gender, economics, and governance, and how these forces influence policy formation and individual lives.
