HIST150C CM - Early Africa in the Global Context

This course draws from such inspirations as Irele’s to provide a corrective to misconceptions and misrepresentations of Africa. Spanning from the earliest times, we will first analyze the representations of Africa, Africans, and their histories and an understanding of how these representations shape conscious and unconscious opinions about and perceptions of the continent, its people, and their cultures and countries. We will study the diverse communities, states, and
cultures which existed across the continent and were part of various larger networks from the earliest humans to the mid-1800s. Broadly, this course will explore the roots of the global hierarchies of power which perpetuate the positioning of Africa as lesser than the West, and the black African as an inverted image of the white person while highlighting the various contributions of Africa to the making of the world as we know it today.
