HIST070 CM - Power, Politics & Early Mod ArtThe course will consider how the character of power structures changed over the course of the long seventeenth century in Europe and the Americas. Specific focus will be placed on the role of the visual arts in projecting or subverting political and religious authority. Organized by city center, we will pursue questions related to the consequences of the Protestant Reformation, the rise of the Dutch Republic, and the increasing circulation of ideas and objects through global trade. The status of the art object in the context of Counter Reformation and the proliferation of printed matter will also be considered along with the emergence of new genres of artistic expression such as crowned nun portraits and ‘casta’ paintings.
