SPAN125A CM - Imagining Latin America: From Conquest to IndependenceThis course starts from the premise that literature can be a window to the past, and to understand contemporary Latin American societies, we need to look back. From the vivid narratives of pre-Hispanic civilizations and the nuanced perspectives of Spanish conquistadores to the narratives on nation-building throughout the nineteenth century, this course traces the evolution of societal imaginings within Latin America. Through close readings and critical analysis, students will explore how various social groups saw and imagined Latin America across different periods.
