LIT177 CM - The Art of OratoryGreat speeches have changed history. This course will explore the art of oratory from ancient Greece to modern America. Examination of speeches of Demosthenes, Pericles, Cicero, Burke, Webster, Lincoln, Churchill, Martin Luther King, and others will be combined with study of theories of oratory and rhetoric from Aristotle to Wayne Booth. Major speeches from classical and modern drama and epic including Shakespeare, Milton, and Melville will also be studied along with films and recordings of 20th-century political oratory. Speech writing and performance will form a practical component of this course.
