LIT143 CM - Art and Politics in the Hollywood WesternThis course examines the intersection of art, politics, and history in that most distinctively American of all film genres, the Hollywood Western. Focusing on about 12 films, we will explore such topics as the frontier; violence; wilderness vs. civilization; race relations; gender roles; the tension between individualism and community; and notions of American national identity. The course aims to familiarize students with the artistic and social dimensions of a major film genre; to enhance students’ abilities to engage in perceptive, critical viewing of films; and to improve students’ writing skills.
