LIT069 CM - Shakespeare’s SonnetsThis course is focused on a single volume of poems which are among the most famous and canonical in English. We will read them closely, with particular sensitivity to their syntax and sonic structure. This will be a course not only in love poetry but in poetic style. We will consider diverse thematic readings and address arguments by Shakespeare’s recent critics. We will often be studying the ways in which interpretability provides new life to old poems. And we will consider what other poets since Shakespeare have made of the sonnet form. We will be constantly studying very great verbal art.
