LIT068 CM - Slow ShakespeareThis course will be about the rewards, and pleasures, of reading Shakespeare’s plays slowly–that is, of engaging in intensive study of a small number or plays rather than surveying the playwright’s entire output in a single genre or period. We will read four plays, taking into account not only broader matters of plot, theme, character, identity, and ideology but also more minute matters of form and performance: diction, meter, syntax, pace, voice, gesture, action, and embodiment. Attention will also be given to recent theoretical treatments of close reading, performance practices, and Shakespeare’s complex status in the contemporary world.
