LIT066 CM - Shakespeare’s ComediesShakespeare’s comedies have entertained audiences for four centuries; they are also complex works of art which reward detailed study. In this course we will read eight of Shakespeare’s comedies, from the lighthearted play The Taming of the Shrew to the darker Measure for Measure, and supplement our readings with film. We will discuss topics such as love, sex, marriage, gender roles, parents and children, figurative language, jokes, scansion, performance in Shakespeare’s time and ours, the nature of comedy, happy endings and those excluded from them.
