This course is an introduction to the history of South Asia between the seventeenth and twentieth centuries, examining the major transformations in politics, society and culture that accompanied the rise of British imperialism and the emergence of nationalism. What role did South Asia have in global historical developments and how, in turn, did global events shape the subcontinent? By considering India’s role in the British empire and other Islamicate societies, we will study topics such as class-formation, industrialization and urbanization, caste and peasant movements, development of religious nationalism, and the quest for national sovereignty.
