HIST167 CM - Gender and History in South AsiaThis seminar looks at the way gender is constituted with a case study of South Asia (India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh). We will use feminist approaches to discuss how ‘women’ and femininity, and ‘men’ and masculinity are produced. After a quick survey of South Asian history to locate gender, we will look at three specific problems areas: how the state and its legal system apportion power to women and men; how education works to produce different gender identities; and how in the arts the human body is differently used and interpreted, and experiences and emotions become gendered.
