HIST126 CM - History of Medicine in the United StatesThis course introduces students to the major questions and methods in the social history of modern medicine through a survey of the development and professionalization of healing practices in the United States from the late eighteenth century to the near present. We will explore the changing meanings of human health and sickness and how gender, race, and class have shaped medical research and experimentation, institutions and authority, access to care and health outcomes. We will also ask what role history can play in the present and future of medicine.
