GOVT144B CM - Comparing Social Movements Across the WorldThis course attempts to understand similar expressions of collective protest, referred to as “social movements”. Analyzing a variety of such movements in both the West and the developing world, we will explore the following questions: What social and political conditions give rise to such movements? How do social movements affect political institutions and vice-versa? What determines their success or failure? What is the impact of social movements both on public policy and on patterns of everyday interaction? In short, we will be concerned with the relationship between social movements, political institutions and public policies.
