RLST076 CM - History and Anthropology of Witchcraft

A cross-cultural and trans-historical exploration of the phenomenon of witchcraft (the use of magical means to harm or help others) with a special focus on indigenous religions, folk religions, and contemporary Wicca. Topics covered will include theories of how magic works and fits into larger religions and cultural systems; the role that witchcraft accusations have played historically, especially in 16^th and 17^th century Europe; and why some contemporary practitioners of magic identify themselves as “witches.”
