HIST055 CM - The Middle East: From Muhammad to the MongolsThis survey is an introduction to the pre-Modern history of the peoples of the classical Islamic lands, from North Africa to Central Asia. The course will cover the time period from the rise of Islam to the Mongol invasions of the 13th century and their aftermath, examining topics such as geography and environment, relations between nomadic and sedentary peoples, the formation of Islamic law, science and philosophy, and the relation between the rulers and the ruled, the state and its subjects.
