LIT088 CM - War and Peace

War and Peace is arguably the world’s most famous novel. Yet its author denied that it was a novel at all, declaring it to lie beyond the scope of conventional literary classification. Whatever we call it, War and Peace remains one of the most stimulating works of literature ever written, dazzling and dizzying readers with its vast array of characters, situations, and events. This course examines Tolstoy’s best-known book as a masterpiece of verbal art and as a profound meditation on war, religious belief, social class, love, death, and the relationship of fiction to philosophy and history.
