LIT107 CM - Modern DramaThis course is a survey of modern dramatic literature beginning with the late-19th century plays of Ibsen, Strindberg, and Chekhov, and continuing to the present day. Students will be introduced to works from a variety of avant-garde movements including Symbolism (Maeterlinck), Dadaism (Jarry), Expressionism (Treadwell), Surrealism (Artaud), Epic Theatre (Brecht), and Theatre of the Absurd (Beckett). We will also become familiar with dramatists of the post-1945 period, including Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, Wole Soyinka, Caryl Churchill, and Sarah Kane.
