GOVT176 CM - American Constitutional HistoryThe development of American constitutional and legal institutions and ideas from the colonial period to the present. Topics of focus include the constitutional conflict with Britain, the framing and ratification of the Constitution, federalism in the early republic, slavery and sectional conflict, the Fourteenth Amendment and civil rights, total war and civil liberties, private law and public policy, and the political role of the modern Supreme Court.
