GOVT142E CM - Chinese PoliticsThe primary objective of this course is to help students both acquire the basic knowledge of politics and political economy of the People’s Republic of China and to develop the analytical skills to understand and explore the underlying factors that shape Chinese political institutions, culture, politics, and social movements. The focus of the first half of the course is on understanding the causes that have contributed to the outcomes of the key political events in China and on analyzing the long-term consequences of these events. The second half of the course examines some of the most important and intellectually interesting topics in contemporary Chinese politics, society, and economy, such as politics reform, democratization, mass media, civil society, corruption, social conflict, ethnic minorities, sustainable development, and China’s experience viewed from a comparative perspective.
