CMC encourages students to participate in internships during the summer or academic year, provided their academic commitments allow for this time-consuming activity. For most summer and semester internships CMC students may apply to receive academic course credit, upon the completion of the specific academic requirements for their selected internship.
CMC’s Sponsored Internships & Experiences (SIE) program offers budget-based funding to students, particularly in their first and second summers, to enable them to pursue domestic and international experiences of 4 to 12 weeks in length. Internships are defined as structured, supervised and lasting a minimum of 8 weeks. Experiences are defined as a form of experiential learning with a research component and lasting a minimum of 4 weeks. With the support of the Soll Center for Student Opportunity, students are responsible for receiving an offer for a summer internship which they will use to submit an SIE application. Online applications open in the Spring Term and are individually reviewed in consideration for funding associated expenses as a result of taking part in the internship.
Sponsored internship programs currently include two academic and research programs:
- CMC Summer Research Program. This program provides research and intellectual opportunities to up to 20 CMC students on campus over the summer.
There are also a number of funds available to support specific experiences and internships which flow through the SIE program, including:
- Appel Fellowship. The Appel Fellowship provides first-year students with funding to support purposeful, independent experiences that culminate in a meaningful writing project.
- The Gould Center Creative Works Fellowship (CWF). The CWF summer program provides CMC students in the humanities the opportunity to engage in meaningful, self-directed projects that culminate in some kind of creative output.
- Kravis Lab Civic Leaders Fellowship.This fellowship offers CMC students the opportunity to secure funding for internships that increase the student’s understanding of a civic institution.
- CMC in India Internship Program. The CMC in India Internship Program provides funding for CMC students who have received offers at internships with multinational information technology, venture capital firms, and non-profits in India.
- Geneen Trust Internship Program. This program supports CMC students at internships associated with corporate governance and business ethics.
- Several research institutes and centers, such as the Gould Center for Humanistic Studies, Kravis Lab for Social Impact, Kravis Leadership Institute, the Mgrublian Center for Human Rights, Keck Center for International and Strategic Studies, and The Lowe Institute of Political Economy also offer dedicated funding for select summer internships.

Students who participate in any internship do so with the understanding that CMC cannot make any representation regarding any acts and/or omissions regarding students’ personal safety or property while at, or traveling to, the intern site, since such matters are beyond the direct control of the College. International students must meet with the director of international student services before registering for any internship, to insure compliance with student visa regulations.
