Fire Safety

Claremont McKenna College takes fire safety seriously and the residence halls are equipped with fire safety equipment including a fire alarm system, fire extinguishers and a fire suppression sprinkler system. The fire alarm system is an essential notification system alerting residents of the need to evacuate a building and providing immediate notification to Campus Safety. Initiating false alarms and tampering with any fire safety equipment or system endangers the safety and well-being of the community and is both unlawful and prohibited by the College.

Students must refrain from hanging anything from the sprinkler heads. This includes, but is not limited to, banners, flags, clothes, and hammocks. If the sprinklers are tampered with, this may activate them and cause flooding. Keep in mind that flooding may not be limited to your room and you could be responsible for damages to numerous rooms.

Students who tamper with fire-fighting or safety equipment (including, but not limited to, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, and fire sprinkler systems) are subject to a fine of $500, expenses for necessary repairs of equipment, other damages resulting from tampering with such equipment including flooding, costs associated with any fire department response, and/or disciplinary action. If a fire extinguisher is discharged without cause and the individual responsible the discharge is not identified, the smallest identifiable group of residents of the building will share responsibility for the $200 fine plus the cost of recharging the fire extinguisher.

Your assistance in maintaining these essential fire safety systems is appreciated.
